  • Sign of the times: New sponsorship deal with leading financial firm

We’re delighted to have signed a three-year sponsorship deal with leading financial firm Sutton McGrath Hartley.

Members and visitiors to the club are now greeted by a number of striking new welcome signs on and around the entrance drive which display the SMH branding.

In addition, over the coming weeks all members will be issued with a new membership card carrying the SMH branding as part of the arrangement.

The card will be used to operate the clubhouse door entry system, bar tills and competition entry terminals using contactless technology.

A charity golf day will be hosted at Chesterfield Golf Club by SMH in August and the company’s representatives will have the opportunity to use our clubhouse facilities for meetings and to entertain clients.

The agreement, initially over three years with the option to extend, brings significant financial input each year to benefit members and helps our continued investment in course and clubhouse.

SMH has a base on Saltergate, Chesterfield, with a head office in Sheffield, and further offices in Buxton, Rotherham, Knaresborough and Wakefield.

They offer a wide range of financial expertise across their family of companies to save clients having to engage multiple advice firms. These include chartered accountants, chartered tax advisers, chartered financial planners, and chartered legal executives.

In addition, SMH offers independent commercial finance and residential mortgage brokering companies, helping clients access the funding they need for personal or business purposes.

Attracting a quality partner like SMH speaks volumes about the esteem with which our club is held in the local business community and we look forward to working closely together for mutual benefit.

WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP: Jonathon Dickens, Partner of Sutton McGrath Hartley, and Mike Aves, Chairman of Chesterfield Golf Club’s Board of Directors celebrate the new three-year sponsorship agreement.

  • SafeGolf accredited - a safe and fun environment for youngsters to enjoy

Looking out for our young golfers

Our junior section is thriving with over 50 members and is often held up as an operating model to others.

A key component of this is our commitment to provide a safe and fun environment for youngsters to find their way in golf and enjoy the game.

Earlier this week we were delighted to receive the SafeGolf accreditation from England Golf after submitting a raft of information which showcased the procedures we have in place.

Our submission also demonstrated all necessary safeguarding checks and training had been conducted for those working with juniors.

    What is SafeGolf?

SafeGolf is a partnership of UK golf bodies committed to promoting a safe and positive environment for all those participating, working and volunteering in the sport of golf.

The SafeGolf partnership consists of members from the golfing bodies across Great Britain and Ireland and has been established to help golf respond to the issue of child protection in sport. Its mission is to safeguard the welfare of children and young people, as well as adults at risk, in the sport of golf.

SafeGolf is firstly a website – www.safegolf.org – through which anyone with a concern about the welfare of a player, or the behaviour or practice of a coach, volunteer, organiser, parent, or player, can contact the lead safeguarding officer at their national governing body.

Secondly, it is the safeguarding standard England Golf promotes to all its affiliated clubs to ensure they provide a safe and positive experience to children and young people whilst playing golf. The PGA is also using the standards to apply to all its PGA professional coaches.

  • Golf’s governing body recognises our ‘inspirational’ commitment to helping girls and ladies enjoy the game

Our continued commitment to growing female participation in golf has been recognised by the R&A.

We are already delivering a number of initiatives for girls and women of all ages and abilities to progress in the game and this was the foundation of our accepted bid to be a signatory to the R&A’s new Women in Golf Charter.

Informing us of our success on behalf of the R&A Jeremy Tomlinson, CEO of England Golf, said:

“I was personally delighted to read the commitments that you have made as part of your commitment to the Women in Golf Charter.

Chesterfield Golf Club will be inspiring other clubs from across the country to develop across all levels of the sport.”

Among the initiatives we will continue to run for girls and ladies are:

    • Two Ladies into Golf initiatives per year to help beginners into the sport
    • A Ladies Golf Academy which was launched in 2019 and acts as a bridge between start up and full membership
    • Visits to primary schools to encourage both boys and girls to try the sport and progress to coaching sessions at the club
    • Delivery of the Girls Golf Rocks initiative which will kick on as soon as COVID-19 restrictions allow

The initiatives have led to over 20 new lady members progressing to join the club in the last two years and we’re committed to growing the ladies’ section a further 10% by the end of 2022.

At the heart of this is ensuring a warm welcome, making golf fun and instilling a camaraderie as groups progress through coaching on our six-hole academy course before heading out onto the main course.

We’re also ahead of the game with the level of female representation in our club governance. We’ve pledged not to rest on our laurels and have committed to ensuring this continues.
