To members of Chesterfield Golf Club,
As a lot of you were aware I entered Open regional qualifying on Monday 20th June at Little AstonGolf Club in Sutton Coldfield. Going into the qualifying I was happy with my game, after playing in local PGA Pro-Am's the week before and placing 3rd and 5th with scores of 69 and 72. One last wet 9 holes of practice on Sunday evening after being in the shop and teaching, I felt ready. With a tee off time of 12:07 me and my caddie for the day, Andrew Merifield, left with plenty of time for a practice and breakfast. Upon arrival at the golf club at 10:30 we learnt of the 1 hour 30 minute delay due to heavy rain, this soon turned into 2 hours, 3 hours and eventually 3 hours 30 mins. New tee time of 3:37. In the 5 hours waiting around there are only so many cups of tea, bacon cobs and practice putts you can have. Good news in this time Andrew didn't manage to sell me another car. The new start time eventually came round and the first tee shot was hit, a steady par on the 1st settled the nerves, another solid tee shot and approach to the 456 yard par 4 2nd I was well under way. Taking 3 putts from there was not in the plan, neither were another 3 putts on both the 3rd and 4th. From here I knew I needed some birdies to have any chance of qualifying, in having to push for birdies I hit some wayward tee shots and was punished with bogeys and double bogeys. I ended up finishing the round +10. As this was my first attempt at Open qualifying, despite being obviously disappointed with my score, I thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a lot. Most importantly I would like to thank every member that donated money to support my entry and went out of their way to send messages of support, it means a lot and I am extremely grateful of the support I received and continue to receive from the membership. There's always next year.
