We are delighted to announce that, following Mike McLean's retirement at the end of January 2017, SHANE NAISBETT has become Chesterfield Golf Club's Head Professional.

Shane was Mike McClean's assistant since 2011 and he qualified as a single 'A' PGA Professional during April 2016 and was promoted to 'AA' status in October 2016. Additionally, he holds a Degree in Professional Golf Studies from the University of Birmingham. He is well known and highly respected by our members and we look forward to a long and harmonious association with him.

Members may also be interested to read the following background information on Shane which indicates that he is blessed with natural sporting ability.

"Long before I ever had a golf club in my hand, it was a tennis racket, starting playing at Chesterfield Tennis Club at the age of 4 just for fun. By the age of 10, I was representing the county at under 12 level, moving on from Chesterfield Tennis Club to Watchorn Tennis Club in Alfreton and then to Derby Tennis Centre and eventually Nottingham Tennis Centre. Throughout this time, I represented Derbyshire at every level from under 12s, 14s, 16s and was part of the under 18 County Championship at Glasgow at the age of 13. Needless to say I was the smallest there and a little overpowered but certainly held my own. I enjoyed countless matches and travelling all over the country and Europe, the highlight being spending a week being coached and playing against the Spanish national juniors at their academy in Barcelona and on their Olympic courts.

As I got older and saw my dad playing golf every weekend, I became curious and gave it a try. With an action that resembled something more like a forehand topspin than a golf swing, I got my first handicap of 18 at Stanedge at the age of 14. I was quickly hooked. My handicap fell to 8 and I got to play in the under 14 county team. This was the time when I joined Chesterfield Golf Club. During my junior golf at Chesterfield I represented Derbyshire at under 16,18 and became Junior Captain in 2007. I then progressed to the County Men's 1st and 2nd teams.

After completing my A-levels at Brookfield Community School I was approached by Mike to see whether I was interested in working in the pro shop with a view to turning professional; it didn't take me long to accept the offer.

I started my PGA qualification in 2011 and after the 3 year course I became fully qualified in 2014 with a degree in Professional Golf Studies from Birmingham University. As a full member of the PGA, I continued to teach the members of Chesterfield Golf Club and represent the club in regional and national professional competitions, achieving 5 holes-in-one, 1 course record (-6 at Horsley Lodge), runner-up in the DPGA match play championships, 2nd in the Derbyshire alliance Professionals Order of Merit in 2015 and 6 professional wins.

I feel completely honoured to be the next Head Professional of Chesterfield Golf Club and cannot wait to get started. I would like to thank all the members for their continued support and look forward to the same into the future."

I am sure all members will welcome Shane's appointment and will join me in wishing him a long and successful association with our Club.
