Thanks to the generosity of members at the various fundraising events we are currently planning our winter coaching programme and new recruits are being measured up for their logo'd club shirts.
We received a cheque for £100 from the Seniors Section last night.
We now have 16 juniors with CONGU handicaps, including five girls. 11 have handicaps low enough for them to enter Junior Opens at other clubs.
Junior Captain's Day is now planned for October 13th with a full range of competitions.
The Junior League team has reached the semi-finals home and away against Shirland on 22nd and 29th September.
GolfSixes kicks off again for the final two matches at Shirland on 16th and 23rd September.
Our juniors continue to do well and have had a very busy week. A big thank you to John Barker for arranging two qualifying competitions.
Jack Barker-Sabido won Tuesday's 18 hole event with 39 points from Olivia Streets on 36. Eva Myers won the 9 hole event with 21 points from Evie McNeil with 19 points.
Thursday's qualifier saw Olivia Streets winning with an impressive 45 points from Joe Streets on 41 points. Jack Sweet and Harvey Sands also broke par with 40 and 38 points respectively.
Both events are a clear indication that our 2017 and 2018 intake are developing at pace with club and county representation just around the corner.
Well done to Benjamin Wharton who played in the US Kids Final at St Anne's.
For those not playing in the Futures Tour on Sunday there will be an opportunity to play as usual at 3.50pm.
Our Juniors continue to go from strength to strength:
WEE WONDERS TOUR

US KIDS CHAMPIONSHIP
Benjamin Wharton qualified for and played in the US Kids Championship at Celtic Manor

AMERICAN GOLF JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Lucia Maturi played in the American Golf Junior Championship qualifier at High Leigh Park and finished 2nd overall (1st in girls) with 41 points to qualify for the UK finals later this month.
BIRKDALE JUNIOR OPEN
Congratulations to Jack Barker-Sabido on his 2nd place nett in the Birkdale Junior Open. His 71 nett was one off the winning total with birdies on the last two holes securing 2nd place on count back.
Congratulations also to our GolfSixes team who finished a very creditable 2nd at South Chesterfield and then returned to winning ways at Stanedge making it three wins and a second so far with two events at Shirland remaining.
HANDICAPSSix of last year’s intake have now progressed to a CONGU handicap with a further five preparing to submit six qualifying cards for an initial handicap.
Lucia Maturi played in a 54 hole competi-tion at Sycuan Lodge, just outside San Diego , the course for her division (girls 9 - 10 yrs), measuring 4,700 yards, par 72.
She shot 92, 87 & 91 - the standard was extremely high, most of the other 10 year olds are home schooled and play 3 day events regularly just like mini pros - the winner shot 69, 71 & 73. There was no CSS but the winner would probably have a handicap of 3!
The opening ceremony was a very grand flag parade of all the nation's taking part held at Torey Pines. Lucia played with girls from China, Thailand, New York, Colorado, Brazil and California.
Closer to home the Golf Sixes squad main-tained their winning record by sharing first place with South Chesterfield at Mat-lock Golf Club. We move on to South Chesterfield for the next two events.
Benjamin Wharton is playing in the US Kids British championships next week.
Jamie Hunt has just qualified for the Wee Wonders British final at St Andrews next month by coming 2nd in the regional final at Branston.
Great performances from our guys at the under 16 short course Championships. Jack Barker-Sabido Gross Champion, Lucia Maturi 3rd nett, and Benjamin Wharton non- Congu winner.

A great set of results that backs up performances in the first two GolfSixes events.
Everyone now knows Chesterfield Golf Club Junior Section is back on the map .....
Back at the club, the Juniors competed for the Members Shield. Louie Cole emerged as the winner with 83-11-72, with George Marsden and Joe Wright both runners-up with nett 75s.
Firstly, thanks to everyone who has supported the Cadets and Juniors so far. We now have a 40-strong section and, on the back of that, have introduced at least six new adult members to the club. Just to advise members that on Sundays holes 1 to 6 are usually in use by the Juniors from 4 to 6pm as are the six holes at the top of the practice ground. Holes 7- 18 are obviously available and by the time you finish the 18th the Juniors will be off the course.
May 27th saw the first game in the Junior Golf Sixes league against Shirland, Matlock and South Chesterfield. 24 golfers played in a Pairs Texas Scramble taking an average 17 minutes per hole.
We made the most of home advantage winning the overall event with a team of Jacob Perkins, Olivia Barker-Sabido, Edward Bonynge, Jamie Hunt, Will De Netto and Sam Sheppard.
The post-match celebrations brought some welcome visitors and bar income to the club.
We are hosting the same event on June 10th and on June 3rd we have the Golf Futures Tour for the first time with over 60 juniors from around Derbyshire.
As Mike has mentioned in his report the Juniors have a Golf Futures Tour taking place at our Club this coming Sunday, 3rd June. This will mean that the Club House is very likely to be very busy with approximately 60 juniors and their parents and I would ask you to make them feel welcome and encourage them along the way. It would be nice to think that some of these visitors could soon become members with encouragement and friendliness.
The juniors tee off at 14.12 and I would suggest that if you would kindly leave the tee free from 14.00 until 17.00 it would make the day run much more smoothly.
Thank you all for your help and consideration.
20 Cadets and Course Cadets have been attending coaching on Tuesday evenings - cadets have had their first putting and chipping sessions whilst Course Cadets have been practising pairs Texas Scramble in preparation for the GolfSixes League. The first game is on May 27th at home against South Chesterfield, Matlock and Shirland. We have two course cadets who have acquired a CONGU handicap - Joe Streets and Benjamin Wharton with others working towards theirs.
Bank Holiday Monday saw the first Juniors Major of the year, the Winter Trophy - a baptism of fire for Joe Streets who followed his 34 handicap by playing his first ever 18 hole round off the white tees - well done Joe. This year’s winner, however, was George Marsden with an excellent 40 points - well done George - with Jack Barker-Sabido in the runner-up spot.
Plenty of news from the past week:
We saw some great performances from our juniors at Friday’s Derbyshire Schools’ Team Championships at Chevin. Jack, Louie and George represented Brookfield and emerged as Team runners-up, and as such may yet get to represent Derbyshire Schools at Woodhall Spa on the Bracken Course on 11th July, in the English Schools Team Championships.
Jack shot a gross 72, the best of the day by 3 strokes, and has been selected to play for Derbyshire Schools’ in the Midlands’ School at half term, and as the best Under 16 and winner of the Will Shappard Memorial he has also been selected to play in the English Schools Under 16s in late July at Thetford. Louie is making great strides and was joint 7th gross on Friday with an excellent 79, beating several players with lower handicaps. He finished runner-up nett, with Jack third nett.
Jack and Louie also qualified for the Derbyshire Schools’ Matchplay in September, with Harvey first reserve (only 8 get through).
A great start to the season for our Junior team - looking very smart in their new kit, they scored well and have taken a 12 point lead in to the next leg at Chapel.
We had to make home advantage count and managed to do this with a superb 41 points from George Marsden leading the way, and Jack Barker-Sabido backing him up well with 36 points.
The juniors competed at Matlock on Sunday in the annual Junior Spring meeting. In the competition there are individual prizes as well as a team prize.
In the individual our best performance was from Louie Cole who shot a commendable nett 70 to finish second nett overall. Also high up was George Marsden with a nett 71.
The Team event was won by Kedleston who played superbly, but we did very well to come joint second with Breadsall, our other scores coming from Harvey Sands with a nett 76, Joe Wright with a nett 76 and Jack Barker-Sabido with a nett 77, for a team score of 217 – best 3 to count.
We had a very enjoyable evening last Tuesday - the rain didn't stop us from engaging our brains in a ‘Know Your Club’ quiz for our new cadets and a taxing ‘Know Your Rules’ quiz for our Course Cadets.
Sunday proved drier if not warmer and, with the course playing long, there were creditable scores all round. Joe Streets won the Gross competition with 30 and shared first place in the nett with Jamie Hunt. Some of last year’s regulars have yet to emerge from either winter hibernation, golfing tournaments/coaching or football duties so we look forward to welcoming them back in due course
A reminder that tomorrow will see both cadets and course cadets playing on their respective courses. Ethan, our Assistant Professional, will make his debut and take the Course Cadets through the Pairs Texas Scramble format as we start to experience different golfing formats.
We now have more than enough hopefuls for the GolfSixes squad - so we will be announcing the squad this week and basing our selection on both ability to play off the blue tees as well recognising an appropriate gender split.
We are looking for helpers to spread the load on Sunday afternoons - Cadet parents will have seen this already but if any of the Junior parents want to help out with the organisation of cards etc I’ve attached the latest lists of dates and volunteers.
Inter-club Order of Merit
Our own George Marsden leads the way with Jack Barker-Sabido and Harvey Sands handily placed and Louie Cole with a bit to do
Cadet Order of Merit
The competition is hotting up in the Cadets Order of Merit - Lucia, Edward and Zachary shared top spot in the net competition with Lucia winning the Gross competition [well done to Michelle on her first solo outing as caddie].
Benjamin moves in to the lead in the Gross competition and Jamie still leads the way in the Net competition.
All tables can be found at the end of this link
Futures Tour 2018
Chesterfield Golf Club will be hosting the Derbyshire Futures Tour on June 3rd - a chance for our players to shine and the club to show off our facilities .....
Some great performances yesterday with Evie and Lucia taking two of the top three places - the Gross and Net Order of Merit tables can be seen at the end of this link. Nice to welcome Isaac Reynolds back to the group after a winter break - and to see Michelle Maturi at the club as a trial run before supporting Lucia next week.
Thanks to Dave Wharton for leading everyone yesterday and getting the cards back to me. You’ll notice a number of handicap reductions based on yesterday’s performance - great evidence of how you’re all progressing. Well done!!.
Also we have some clubs for sale - follow this link to see what's on offer
Great performances in testing conditions this weekend - back on to summer greens yet four players achieved handicap reductions. Benjamin Wharton won the Gross competition and Joshua Clough the Net competition - both attracted a handicap reduction along with Zachary Clough and Jamie Hunt.
Jamie Hunt still leads the Net competition with Archie Umpleby leading the Gross competition.
The remaining dates are:
January 21st, 28th
February 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th
March 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th
Our cadets and juniors enjoyed their second presentation event in the clubhouse before Christmas - the weather prevented the planned outdoor activities but a hastily produced quiz from John Barker sent the children hunting for clues around the clubhouse to develop their understanding of the club’s history. Captain Chris Lightfoot presented awards covering skills, attitude and medal performances with Junior member Jack Barker-Sabido and Challenge Tour member George Woolgar giving insights as to what it takes to progress from Junior through County and on to professional ranks. Proceedings were rounded off by an excellent buffet from Neil.
The cadets and juniors are not resting on their laurels - winter coaching is taking place on Thursday nights with Shane and Andy Carnall at Barlborough Links and Sunday morning with Shane at CGC; on top of that we have a new weekly Cadet Order of Merit competition sponsored by Prosperity running through to the end of March and a similar Order of Merit for Juniors with CONGU handicaps between Chesterfield, Matlock and South Chesterfield over the same timeframe.
The cadet competition takes place on Sunday afternoons from 2pm moving out as the daylight stretches out and the CONGU competition sees us sharing hosting duties with the other clubs - keep an eye on the screen in the foyer as this displays all the Junior events and their timings.
We will soon be recruiting new cadets and juniors for 2018 so if you know of anyone interested in joining please contact Mike Barker at [email protected].
We’ve not said who’s in our cadets so here’s a roll call:
Joe Streets, Olivia Streets, Sam Turton, Sam Sheppard, Archie Umpleby, Edward Bonynge, Zachary Clough, Joshua Clough, Olivia Barker-Sabido, Imogen Bownes, Jacob Perkins, Ieuan Hooper, Samuel James, Charlotte Miles, James Miles, Oliver Brown, Faith Unwin, Ben Wharton, Freddie Sanders, Alexander Binks, Oliver May, Thomas Slater and Isaac Reynolds.
July 18th is the end of term awards evening - Captain Chris Lightfoot will present the awards and we also hope that Peter Boardman will be there to present the shirts that he has sponsored through his company, Somersall Finance.
The Cadets are progressing well in the Junior Golf Passport skills and we’ll soon be moving some of the cadets back to the 200 yds markers before introducing Blue Tees on the main course as some cadets are now out-growing the 150 yds. markers.
On the Junior front - we’re hoping to run a Junior Captain's event on either 14th or 15th August to include both Cadet and Junior competitions.
Cadet coaching on Tuesday nights has now finished - we concluded with another look at putting the short game coaching into practice around the practice ground course - some excellent progress was overseen by Shane and we had a few holes in one!! The evening rounded off with a putting competition on the practice green with some more holes in one and, as you can see from the photo, some were reluctant to leave until they had nailed it, despite the gloom and fading light. Thanks were given to Shane for his coaching and to Nick Miles and his team for setting up and maintaining the six hole practice ground course and for the new blue tees on the main course.
A winter coaching programme has been devised, starting in November, where we will be using Barlborough Links driving range and benefitting from the combined professional skills of Shane and Andy Carnall as the cadets focus on their long game. We are convinced that within our current group there are a number of potential future club and county representatives
Nearer to home, on October 8th, we will be hosting South Chesterfield Golf Club. 12 of our cadets will play alongside 12 South Chesterfield cadets in a Texas Scramble competition with a shotgun start at 4pm on the first six holes of the main course - the 1st will be closed from 2.45 to allow everyone to clear the first six holes. At the same time six of our cadets and six from South Chesterfield will play a competition on the practice ground course. Nick Roberts will be in attendance to capture some action shots and also get some team photos with our shirt sponsor, Peter Boardman.
Our first season has gone really well - we targeted 20 cadets in anticipation of a 30% retention rate - we have actually ended the season with 29 cadets [25% are girls, which is great news for the ladies section]. If you know of anyone who would be interested in joining next year’s programme you can email Mike Barker at:
[email protected] with names and contact details.
Finally, we’d like to thank the members of Chesterfield Golf Club for making the cadets feel welcome and for all the positive comments we’ve received over the past few months.
Winner Zachary Clough Runner up Jamie Hunt
Winner Benjamin Wharton Runner up Lucia Maturi
