Chesterfield Members Play in the RBNI Rotary Club
Golf Championship On Monday 5th September, a team from our Club consisting of Bill Preston, Paul Bywater and Ron Enock and representing Chesterfield Scarsdale Rotary Club won the above final held at the Leicestershire Golf Club. The championship which is open to Rotary members from across the British Isles starts with regional knockout stages, the winners of which are entered into the final. Prize trophies were awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd best team and individual scores, the winning teams were presented with cheques payable to Rotary Foundation of 1st £2,000, 2nd £1,000 and 3rd £750. These funds will be used in support of the worldwide “End Polio Now Campaign” and will benefit from the two for one supplement from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Recent reports indicate that Polio has almost been eradicated worldwide with the exception of a few cases in Afghanistan and Nigeria where fighting restricts the access of WHO personnel.
Well Done Marie
Our Ladies Captain, Marie Watson entered the England Golf Senior Ladies North Tournament at Wetherby Golf Club last week. The competition consists of a practice round then two days’ Stableford competition. The Wetherby course is very challenging, particularly the greenside bunkering!! She managed to win the prize for the best day 1 score and also reduced her handicap. The second day she had a good front nine scoring 19 points but realising she was in the running for the overall prize, nerves set in ..... oh dear only 9 points on the back 9 .... perhaps a psychology lesson from our Pro. might be required!!
Hole in one
Sally Trueman had a hole-in-one at the 166 yard par 3 sixth hole at Doncaster Golf Club on the 1st September in their Seniors Mixed Am-Am, playing with husband, Richard, and John and Lynn East.
SUGC Inter-club Foursomes Knockout
The SUGC inter-club foursomes final, with Chesterfield Golf Club playing against Wath Golf Club, was held over the Lindrick course on August Bank Holiday Monday. With the first game going to Wath and the second to Chesterfield, all rested on our third pairing of Peter Howitt and David Streets. All square with two to play and halves at the 17th and 18th meant that this match would have to continue on a sudden death basis. Unfortunately, Wath prevailed at the first extra hole but our team should be congratulated for their overall performance in reaching the final.
The other players on the day were Rob Rhodes and Paul Whitworth and Daryl Budworth and John Safhill. Through the earlier rounds, Nick Miles, Steve Gunn and Curtis Wilson were also team members.
We entered two teams into this year’s knockout competition and our designated ‘B’ team has won through to the final which will be played over the Wollaton Park Golf Course on Sunday, 2nd October, commencing at 11.00 a.m. Clubs from the North Midland counties are eligible to enter this competition and, in an exciting semi-final, played over the Rotherham (Thrybergh) Golf Course, Chesterfield beat Denton Golf Club by 4 matches to 3. Rotherham Golf Club will be our opponents at Wollaton Park and team captain, Paul Bywater, would welcome any support by Chesterfield members.
DLCGA Foursomes Knockout
The Ladies Bronze team won their foursomes knockout against Maywood. The players were Pat Taylor and Barbara Sims, who won by 3 up, and Liz Outram and Liz Cromwell, who won by 5 up. We wait to hear who we play in the next round.
