That was the week that was!
The start of Captains’ week this year went back to being a barbeque on the Friday night, with the difference that it included juniors members and families, making it extremely well supported, in fact a sell out!
The juniors organised a putting competition which was won by David Cromwell (with his eyes shut!)
Peter Copley put on a quiz which had everyone guessing.
After a delicious barbeque put on by Neil and his staff, and before the singer came on to entertain us for the rest of the evening, the presentation was made to secretary Trevor Glover on his retirement.
Club Chairman Mike Aves said a few words on behalf of the Board and members before presenting Trevor with his gift of a travel voucher for £1,000. Trevor was very emotional and very appreciative of the generosity of all how contributed. (I would like to thank you all personally too for helping me achieve the amount.)
Trevor expressed how much he had enjoyed being part of Chesterfield Golf Club and he would miss it but he was sure that he was leaving it in safe hands with Sean now as secretary, but, you have seen the last of him as he will be back in September to help with the financial year end!
The day started bright and early with volunteers on the desk at 6.30am to welcome the first of the players. The weather could not have been better, not a cloud in the sky.
The Captain entertained the Board members to breakfast which was a welcome feast.
After breakfast the Captain went off to greet as many of the members as possible round the course to ensure that they were having a good time
Mr Captain’s wife Marie entertained the ladies of the past Captains, ladies committee, and the board members etc to a very fine tea. Neil really did push the boat out and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.Our sincere thanks go to Martin and Marie for this lovely event. The reception and dinner was appreciated by all.During his address, Mr Captain made a point of thanking everyone who had been involved with the organisation of the day, saying that until you come to have to do it you just do not realise how much is involved. The Captain then went on to present the prizes. The winner of the Captain’s Prize was John Otterwell with a nett 68 (on count back 9). Also Jack Barker-Sabido won the best Junior. Many congratulation to all prize winners. We have it from good authority that the Captain thoroughly enjoyed himself and made it last well into the early hours!
Captain’s Extra Day
This again was a brilliant day for weather and those taking part all seemed to enjoy themselves. The day itself was less stressful as the format of the competition was Stableford and from the yellow tees.Neil again put on another good meal which everyone enjoyed, after which the Captain thanked those who took part, playing and helping before the prize giving. The winner Graham Dunks with 35pts (BB9). Many congratulations. Runner up Bob Adams again with 35 pts. Best front 9 Bob Isherwood with 21 pts. Nearest the pin on the 15th Colin Douch and on the 8th John Camm.
Lady Captain’s Day
Another glorious day in Captains’ week. The Lady Captain’s theme was ‘red, white and blue’, in support of England in the football World Cup and as everyone was aware they would be playing in the evening whilst we would be enjoying a lovely meal. The ladies and gentlemen helpers all entered into the spirit of the theme, just one of the examples of the lengths some of us go to! (others can be found on the club’s website and Facebook page). Before the ladies could go home and get ready for the evening, there was the putting competition and a well received glass of Pims.We returned to the clubhouse at 7pm for the meal and prize giving with the room looking great in its red, white and blue; Neil and his staff had done the Captain proud. After a lovely meal the Captain gave her speech in which she thanked everyone for all they had done for her.Competition secretary Di Gillatt, then announced the prize winners for the Lady Captain who presented them. The winner of the Captain’s prize being Pippa Sutherland with a net 69. Many congratulations to you all the prize winners.
Also on the Ladies Captain’s Day, Olivia Street and Charlotte Miles took part in the Masson Shield, sharing the win, both at 7 under.
Fourteen couples took part in the competition in another gloriously sunny day, the Captains’ and members have certainly been saying their prayers as it has been a long time since we have had such exceptional weather for Captains’ week. The format of the competition was 4BBB stableford and all the scores of each team were added together and the winnerwas the one with the most points. After playing, Neil put on a really lovely buffet which was enjoyed by all and was just perfect for the occasion.President Liz then went on to say a few words and thanked everyone for taking part and handed over to the Captain who then made the presentation to the President whose team were the winners.
