Captain's Newsletter

Thank you for electing me Captain of Chesterfield Golf Club. It is an honour and privilege to be able to serve you, the members, and I am very much looking forward to my year.

As incoming Captain, I would like to thank the outgoing Captains, Chris and Liz, for all their hard work during their year, as well as the rest of the Board for their tireless contribution on behalf of all members. During my time on the Board, I acknowledge that we have not always got everything right, but all decisions are, and always will be, arrived at with the best interests of Chesterfield Golf Club as well as you, our members, in mind.

So, looking ahead at the year to come, what an awesome opportunity you have given me. Respecting the values and traditions of our Club remain at the heart of my objectives but I also want to see a more vibrant, modern and forward-thinking Club.

Many of you may already be aware that the Junior Section is particularly important to the future long-term success of our Club and I want to recognise this by making their section my principal cause for my Captain’s year. My aim is to raise sufficient funds to enable them to establish the best Junior Academy in the region and create a legacy for future generations to come. This can only be done with your support.

You will see that there is a Captain’s Bunker this year on the 6th hole and there is a collection tin on the bar for contributions from all the unfortunate souls who visit this bunker throughout my year.

In addition to the Junior Section, recent events highlighted the excellent work done by the Air Ambulance Service, so I intend to make a donation at the end of my year to this charity also. A separate collection tin is available for those who would prefer to support this excellent cause.

Looking at the social events this year, I hope that many of you who may not have been to these recently will give one a try, as these can only improve and flourish if you, our members support these events. Your feedback will also be instrumental in further developing these events in future.

Social Events – Please put these in your diaries

17th March – Music by a three piece 80’s group, Prophecy and one of Neil’s excellent curry night themes.

5th May – Chesterfield Golf Club moves to Vegas with a Casino night – champagne reception, canapes and a light buffet throughout the evening with various prizes and instrumental guitar music by Bart Pickford.

29th June – A Summer Celebration, weather permitting this is intended to be a barbecue evening with members being encouraged to reflect the colourful attire of summer evening. Music will be provided by an up and coming young artist, Laura Ashby.

1st September – A Captain’s Party – as this is my 50th year I thought I would try something a little different. With a Wigs and Glasses fancy dress theme, cocktail bar, photo booth

and disco, please come along and celebrate my birthday with Neil providing traditional party food.

17th November – Our Annual Dinner Dance – The excellent Ashby Big Band will provide the music to our more traditional black tie dinner dance.

31st December – New Year’s Eve – Chequers have been booked as a returning favourite across the membership; this is to be a party atmosphere worthy of welcoming in the New Year with members’ friends and family.

9th February – Is it really over already – Captains Last Dance – please note the date but the event is not yet finalised as Tracey and I want to see how the year goes before signing off with a final celebration.

In addition to this, we anticipate holding a Glitter Ball event along the “Strictly” theme, a Gin tasting event as well as the usual Carol Concert (14th December) and Children’s events. We also hope to announce a couple of Junior events to be organised during the year which I hope members will support in good numbers.

And don’t forget our ever-popular Dress Down Nights! Generally held monthly on Friday evenings with the theme: Chinese; Indian; Italian; Fish; Barbeque; etc., announced about four weeks in advance. This is a low-cost, relaxed dining evening with background music and a great evening with friends. Watch the main notice board for details.

Captain’s Day will be on 1st July and invitations will be posted shortly. Please remember that your invitation is to play golf and attend the Captain’s dinner and prize giving. In addition to the usual winners, there will a be a Hidden Holes and Beat the Pro competitions as well as an opportunity to enter the “I finished on the Green” fund raising raffle. Various other prizes will be announced on the day.

Looking at Away trips – these are planned to be at Hillsborough (June 11th) and Lindrick (October 18th) with further details nearer the time. It would be great if you were able to join me on these.

My Captain’s Friendlies has a full programme this year with new friendlies planned with Lindrick GC and Ashbourne GC. If you have not played in these before, please see Paul Bywater and get involved. Full details are on the Notice Board in the Gents Changing Room.

Shane and I are also looking forward to playing with as many of you as possible in the Captain Pro challenge matches with more dates being made available as demand dictates.

Tracey and I are also looking forward to some mixed golf challenges with a number of dates available. Please sign up as usual. Once again, more dates can be given if demand is there.

Finally, as your Captain, I am happy to receive any constructive feedback, thoughts or contributions you wish to make during my year as it is you, the members, who will help make this a truly memorable year for us all.

Please contact me on 0789 491 4144, [email protected] or via the office.

Members should also feel welcome to approach me in the Clubhouse but I would prefer you not to approach me when I am playing on the course.

Thank you and enjoy your golf!

Martin Bonynge, Captain
