Junior Captain's Day Dinner

Although I have never been directly involved with the running of the Junior Section I have always taken an active interest in junior matters and when Bill Preston, the Chairman of our Junior Section, asked me to present the prizes at the inaugural Junior Captain’s Day Dinner recently I readily accepted. Of course, the development of this Section in recent years had not escaped my attention and, indeed, I never miss an opportunity to thank Bill and his team for all the good work they are doing. The organization of this event was no exception and I would like to congratulate them all yet again for managing it

in such a professional manner.

When I entered the dining room I was greeted by sixteen immaculately dressed juniors, who obviously took a pride in their appearance, There was not a single loose tie or shirt hanging outside a pair of trousers in sight and, as I mentioned in my short speech later in the evening, they were a credit not only to the Club and their parents, but more importantly

they were a credit to themselves.

If that was not enough, Neil and Nicola laid on a meal selection of beef burgers and chips or egg, sausage and chips, followed by apple pie, which was fit for the occasion.

When the meal was completed the Competition results were announced and the prizes were presented to the winners.

Best Gross Will Sharp

2nd Best Gross Joe Howard

Best Net George Parry

2nd Best Net Nathan Jones

Best +28 Handicap Jacob Twigg

Nearest the Pin James Hewitt

Putting Competition Jack Barker

Speeches were then given by Junior Captain, Phillip White, and Junior Vice Captain, James Hewitt, which would have graced any Club Captain’s Day and I was particularly impressed by the way that the older juniors mentored their younger counterparts during the evening.

At the end of the proceedings I was left with a tremendous feeling of pride. There is no doubt in my mind that these youngsters represent the future of golf and although many of them may not wish to become full playing members when they grow older I am sure that that the standards of behaviour, etiquette and dress that they have come to accept at Chesterfield Golf Club will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.

Trophy Cabinet & NoticeBoard

Bill Preston and Bill Woolgar are pictured below in front of the Junior Trophy Cabinet and Noticeboard that was installed in the “snug” / Junior room. The noticeboard and cabinet formed an important part of the successful process of achieving “Golf Mark” for our golf club and is a fitting memorial to Bill’s father, Gordon Woolgar, who supported the junior section throughout his many years of membership and service to our club.

Members and Parents Evening

The meeting held on Wednesday 20th October was successful and well attended with 18 Juniors and parent in attendance, so well in fact that the snug was barely large enough to accomodate everyone. Three families who were interested in their children becoming members were invited for their first visit on the night. The meeting updated the parents and juniors on the year's progress so far and launched the winter coaching and playing programme, followed by a questions and answers.
